  72. Hey everyone! Sorry Ive been so bad about posting! We dont have the internet at home since we’ve moved back to Palestine so I only get online at work if I get the chance! Deb called me and said I needed to post though!! My due date is May 11th but I think if he doesnt come on his own by May 8th we will induce. 3 days early wont hurt. Its been weird as far as eating but I’ve managed. Ive actually only gained about 18 lbs. I had gained more but now Im losing it. I wasnt really sick in the beginning but now here at the end I throw up pretty much everything I eat- but I think its because hes gotten bigger and hes squishing my already tiny stomach. Makes sense to me anyways lol. Ive had trouble keeping my iron up as usual so the dr wants to avoid a C-section because of the extra blood loss, but he said he thinks I will be OK. I have another iron infusion scheduled for June just to make sure everythings up where it needs to be. We are living back in Palestine and I do plan to make it to a meeting eventually. We bought a house and have done TONS of work to it since February and have been busy getting ready for the baby and getting settled in that I just havent had the chance to make it to Tyler for a meeting yet. Anyways, just wanted to let everyone know how things are going! I will post again after the baby is here!

  73. Hi, I did call Valerie. She is due May 11th. It was the 5th and they changed it to the 11th.
She said she does not look pregnant. She is working.
Boy it is. We wish her well.
She may post soon she said.
    Have a good week

    Comment by Deb A — April 16, 2008 @ 8:20 am

  74. Hi to all.
Just looking to see what has been going on.
I am still doing fine. I am 4 1/2 years out now.
I am maintaining. I am up about 10 pounds from my original loss of 152 pounds. I am still at goal. I was under my goal weight.
    I was diagnosed with Hyper-Thyroid.
I started medicines to slow my system down.
Wow, all those years wanting my thyroid to work and it kicked into gear. Most loose weight when they are hyper. I gained 14 pounds quick.
I knew something was wrong, because i had maintained for 3.5 years.
Keep a watch on your bloodwork. That is how we found my problems.
The doctor said ” Are you tired” I just assumed i was tired because of the surgery.
I am feeling better everyday. It takes a while for the meds to slow the thyroid down.
    Everyone have a good week.
Hi to all the oldies. I know everyone is busy.
As for Valerie, I will try to get Michelle to call her.
They are living back in Palestine last i heard. I know she is getting excited.
    Deb

  76. Hello everyone…..I have not had the surgery and am struggling at this point to get the money needed for the surgery. My insurance will not cover any of it, even with doctors referrals, so if you have ANY information on how to get “around” this problem, please let me know. Also, congratulations on all the weight lose…you have all done so well!!!!!!

  77. tina, thanks so much for the inspiration..that is what i need right now..i have made my appoint for my psyche consult and dr. hayden for my thyroid test…i just wish it was time already…i am very impatient as u can see. lol..later :)

    Comment by tslackey — April 8, 2008 @ 11:12 am

  78. Tslackey, the best thing you can do it take on day at a time and the journal has its purpose, for us to ‘really see’ what we are eating every day. The mindless eating that we do, or the combinations of foods, that have gotten us where we are today. You can do this, the surgery will be here before you know it. Be honest with yourself and the nutritionist, the surgery is only a ‘tool’ and you will need what you will learn, after surgery. Hope everyone is having a great week. Do your personal best. 85. DGERTZJR, Well, it sounds like you are on your way. Baby steps and every day is a new day, with all of us. You will soon find out what you can and can not tolerate. Its a process. Im down 45 pounds, slow but sure for us Banders. They would not fill me the last time I was there, had lost over what they considered good in between office visits. Grrr. But I guess if your in the loosing mode, they dont want to mess with it. Hope everyone has a great week! Tina H-LBand 090607

  88. YEA!!! I’ve passed over the hump, I lost 3 lbs this week bringing my total to 150#… Woohoo! I’m so happy now b/c the last 3 weeks have been crappy in the weight loss dept.
Tina…Thanks so much for your encouragement. While I realize that 147 is a lot to lose, we get caught up in the numbers game and get distracted. So, thanks for your words!
I talked to my dr’s office up here b/c I was concerned w/ my liquid intake. She told me to mix 2 cups warm water w/ 1 lemon. It doesn’t have to be hot like coffee, but warm. You can mix in sugar substitute to sweeten. It’s working, it helps you drink more… or it could be she’s using “reverse psychology” on me to make me drink more…either way, I’m getting in my liquids!
I hope everyone has a Great Monday and a great week. ~Shellie -150lbs GBS 5/7/07

    Comment by Shellie — March 10, 2008 @ 8:30 am

  89. Shellie, 147# is nothing to sneeze at!!! Stop beating yourself up….but I totally understand your feeling. You want to see the scales move. I had the Lapband, so things move slower for us but I do know that when I started working out, my weight loss stopped and I even gained a couple of pounds the first week. I assume its just your body adjusting. And then all of a sudden you will start loosing again. Force your water, maybe even ‘cheat’ on something small and then go right back to healthy eating and sometimes that tricks the body into weight loss again. You ‘are’ doing this…just keep up your spirits! Tina H-Lapband 090607

    Comment by Tina H — March 7, 2008 @ 7:43 pm

  90. Help, I’m stuck!!! I haven’t lost any weight in 3 weeks!!! I had an awesome 5 lb loss one week and then nothing. UGH! I know that my body is changing…but I want to see a number. LOL. I’ve started exercising here recently (couldn’t before b/c of my back)… so maybe it takes a while for that to show some #s(???). Need some encouragement! I’m down 147lbs and I’m almost 10 months post op so I know that I’m doing good. I just want it to continue. Any suggestions on how to get over the hump??? Thanks for anything and everything!!! ~Shellie GBS 5/7/07

    Comment by Shellie — March 3, 2008 @ 9:07 am

  91. Kathy, I hear ya….its really hard to find something you can eat with some dignity in public without having to run to the bathroom. I try to stick to pureed soups in public, or ‘maybe’ a salad will stay down, but have not found much of anything else in the public setting. Every day is totally different with the food category. But I have noticed a trend, with when I am doing good with keeping my food down and no vomiting going on, I seem to loose weight during that time. When I am having a hard time keeping anything down, then my body seems to want to keep onto the weight and I dont loose. Guess that makes sense. Maybe that was what they were referring to when they were wanting to take some fluid out. Take it one day at a time and keep up the good work! Tina H- Lband 090607

    Comment by Tina H — March 1, 2008 @ 12:35 pm

  92. I know what you’re talking about. Sometimes I can hardly eat anything and sometimes liquids don’t want to stay down. However, I never have any trouble with most “fattening” foods staying down! I just try to eat slowly and take little bits and chew and chew. If I do this, most foods work. However, I cannot eat a hamburger and that used to be my favorite food!

  94. Hello everyone! I have not been on here in a while. My year is approaching April 5th. Still need to loose 10lbs. I just stopped a while back and it want start up again. Hope everyone is great. I’m doing good. Sometimes in the afternoon I get the shakes real bad and have to eat a banana. My legs hurt so I was thinking my potassium might be getting low too. I love Gastric Bypass. It as cured my fatty liver, high blood pressure and acid reflux. Even though I get a craving for a chocolate malt sometimes I just say Oh well! Life goes on and I love it. Good luck to everyone! 95. Sherry, I almost never come to this message board anymore, but stopped by today and I can’t BELIEVE I’m reading that you were at SG Monday night; the first Monday night I’ve missed in forever! :( I’m so sad I missed you. I had a parent meeting at a homeschool thing and just met up with the girls at Stabucks later. I so wish you had thought about dropping by there, but I know you probably had to get back. Wah. I’m sad we missed seeing you. It sounds like you’re doing amazingly well with your loss!! I’ve now lost 155 lbs. and am at goal. I feel amazing. We probably would hardly recognize each other anymore, unless, of course, you still have that cool, short platinum haircut!! I loved that. Do you have the same email? Are you on Facebook? We need to keep in touch. Love, Steph

That is what I get for driving up from Austin with out letting you guys know so we could get together. Oh well it was still nice to be around other people who get what it means to live such a different physical life now. Hope everyone is doing well.

  98. Hello ~ hope everyone is doing well. Tina ~ am sorry for the loss of your mother. Thoughts and prayers are with you as I’m sure it’s still difficult at times.

I’ve really tried to be aware of things I’m eating…and I’m going to give myself a few weeks to really evaluate it. I’ve been trying to watch what I eat. As far as my metabolism… I don’t think I have one!! (lolo). I think in the next week or so I’ll be trying to determine if I need to have some fluid removed!! Still hard to think that would make a difference! Will keep you posted!

You can also post if you have questions and you will have a lot of help and answers. They also have a chat room.

  100. Susan, I agree, its a learning curve, trying to figure out what is right and what works. What worked the last month, does not work this month. Its totally understandable that you are having a hard time emotionally getting grounded again….I lost my Mother Feb 2007 and I am still trying to figure the emotional out. I just find it hard to believe that removing part of the restriction, would help you loose weight…unless it allows you to eat more of the right foods, and thus increasing your metabolism??? I wish there were more LapBanders with experience that we could turn to. We will figure it out, take it one day at a time and make good choices. Tina H-LBand 090607

    Comment by Tina H — February 11, 2008 @ 6:40 pm

  101. Hi Tina (H) ~~~ Well, here’s how I figure it (lolol).. When my father passed away (Nov), my exercising decreased tremendously, if any at all for a weeks/months. While I still got all the liquids in daily, my eating choices at times, were’t the best.

I have 3 fills with a total of 5.5 cc’s; the last fill (in November) is the most restriction I have felt and with that came getting sick after eating until I got used to the restriction. I do believe some of it was stress related. The logic is if you have too much restriction then you eating choices tend to change, you go for the “softer” foods because those you’ll keep down - and those are sometimes the worst - ice creams, puddings, etc..

The “grace period” is for me to get back on track; start exercising, eating right, back to the basics of what we should be doing! Having said all this, the wt. that I “gained” and showed up in the office last week, is already gone - and I really haven’t done anything — yet…So, really, I wasn’t too upset about it. Although it gave me some insight to the potential problems those of us with bands can have.
    Take care! Susan LB 07/07

    Comment by Susan — February 10, 2008 @ 1:36 pm

  102. Susan LB 07/07, I dont think I am understanding this…how can too much of a restriction make you GAIN weight? How many fills have you had? Do you know the amount of CC’s that you have? When I asked the last time, she said 10cc was the max and that most people start with 3cc in at surgery and then the additional fills occur. So, during your 3 week ‘grace’…what are you suppose to do different? Hope they figure this out, keep me informed. Tina H- LBand 090607

  103. Hello everyone ~~ Tina (H) I live in Longview and therefore haven’t attempted to go to the meetings. I did, however, go for my first appt. since November. While I was hoping to get a fill (as I hadn’t lost anything since November) I was shocked when I was told they thought I might have too much! After it was all said and done and explained ~~ it made sense (I guess (lolo). I did have some of the “symptoms” of too much of a fill - throwing up (which ceased months ago), some reguritation and here comes the good one… wt. gain! (they had me at a 3 +/- wt. gain) — So before taking out some fill I was given a 3 wk “grace” period to regroup and see what happens. Soooo, it looks like I’m filled to compasity!!! We’ll see! Have a good wkend! Susan LB 7/07

  107. Shellie, That is great news. I had disc surgery a while back and although it did help some I still have some pain. I am hoping that as I lose more weight I will have the same result as you have.

Had my 3rd fill today. I am hoping this one will be the “sweet” one. After my 2nd fill I had good restriction for about a week then it kinda wore off.

Tina - - I have never made it to a meeting. I live in Edgewood and it is quite a drive for me. I might try and make the next one.

  108. Hello All!!! I have excellent, exciting news! I went back to my spine doctor and since losing 146 lbs I may not have to have back surgery!!! After my latest MRI the herniated disc has gone from “severe” to “mild” and is not really a concern anymore. I still have the problems w/ my last, lowest discs but we’re going to try some physical therapy and injections (again). They are treating me as a “new patient” since my body has changed so much. I still have pain everyday but it is tolerable. Exercise still hurts me so I haven’t been doing much other than working and housework. I was in the pool at the gym until it got too cold. I know, excuses, excuses…but hey, I lost 5 lbs this past week. I hope everyone has a great week.

Sharon/Susan, do you go to the local meetings? I have not been able to go because of schedule restraints on that day of the week. 110. Hi, everyone! Sorry I haven’t posted in a while. My surgery was 12/20. My first fill is tomorrow. I’ve done some reading and kind of know what to expect, but one thing I’ve learned is that you can read about other people’s experiences and try to imagine what it will be like, but when you go though it it’s another story…LOL

I will be exactly 6 weeks out of my lap band surgery tomorrow and I am down about 36 pounds. I don’t feel much restriction, but I still do not eat nearly the amount I used to. That’s good, and I’m looking forward to eating even less.

The other day, my stomach was making all kinds of noises, and my brain said, “Oh, you’re hungry.” Then I realized that I really wasn’t hungry at all, that it was my food digesting! I guess I had always kept my belly so full that I never really noticed my food digesting. It was kind of a weird but wonderful feeling!

Well, hope everyone is well. Sorry about the passing of loved ones that I read above. You’re still in my prayers.

    God bless y’all!

    Hang in there.
For all to know i am going to the gym at least 3 times a week.
Working out and i hate every minute of it.
A must for me to loose the 10 pounds.
I got my bloodwork back and my doctor got excited.
My thyroid has gone wacko again.
This might be why i gained 10 pounds so fast.
Anyway it is coming off slowly.
I have an appointment with the specialist in February.
Everyone that had gastric bypass, it is so important to have your blood work done.

    Have a good week.

  113. Hi everyone ~~ Tina, I’m still holding at 50 lbs., but like others blame myself… I still eat what I consider to be a significant amount, and at times eat when I’m feeling “full” and know it can lead to my getting sick. So I have to work on the self control issue of things.

I’m glad to know the max. CC fill - I’m at 5.5 CC’s. I do go in next month (had to reschedule Jan. appt.) I hope to get another fill, I currently have had 3 fills, and really the 3rd fill is the only one I’ve been able to “feel” the restriction most talk about. I figure I must have one heck of a big stomach!!

I’m keeping a positive attitude, as I anticipate things starting to move again. Things have settled down…a bit since my Dad passed in November. I’m beginning to feel like I can get back into the swing of things with increased exercising and better eating - hopefully, if I get a fill this next month it’ll be the push I need to get going! Hope all is well with your jouney!

I believe at the consultation that Dr. B said that all fills/visits were included the first year; and visits after that time were at an additional fee (like any routine office visit…) Don’t remember any $$ fees mentioned though. Take care everyone! Susan LB 07/07

  114. Tina, I’ve lost close to 50 pounds. I know it’s not a lot but I never gained the whole year which I understand some people do. I hope to lose about 50 more pounds. The weight loss has been slow but a lot of that is my fault–not exercising like I should, not drinking water like I should and eating things I shouldn’t. But this is the first time in my life that I can remember going a whole year (Thanksgiving and Christmas) and losing weight.

  118. Kathy–I dont know about the follow up post 1 year, as I just had my surgery 090607. I would assume he would still see you, but not sure about the fills? Do you know if you have met the max CC’s on the fill. I actually just asked Cathy that question this last time I went Jan 08 (my second fill), about what is the max CC of fills you can have and she said 10cc. So, I am sure it depends on what kind of band you had implanted and the max capacity on it. How are you on your weight loss after 1 year? How much is ‘you’ and how much is the ‘band’? Susan-LB 070707, how are you doing on your program?….as you are a few months ahead of me. Sharon–this second fill is about to get to me, sounds like I am following the same path as your 3rd fill, its been a battle to keep anything down, yet not an ounce lost. GRRRR. Tina LBand 090607

  124. ToniM…think really hard, is there anyplace that you have been for the past five years, that would have weighted you for any reason. Family doc, dental, ER’s, Urgent care, weight loss programs, anything? If nothing comes to mind, contact your insurance and see if photo’s of yourself for the past 5 years would work? Just explain your situation and see if there is an alternative to the PCP doc.

But you are getting a handle on it and it will get better with time. Trust me, I have had more than 5 years of morbid obesity! :) The dr.’s offices are getting very used to it so when I called mine here in Athens, they knew exactly what I was talking about! Good Luck! I went in for my introductory visit in October & had my surgery December 7th.

Sorry I haven’t been on here in a while everyone! Good to see everyone. I had went for my first appointment & had lost 15.4 lbs. in 20 days!! Woo hoo!! That’s even after Christmas.

I haven’t had my first fill yet but I go back on the 21st & I might then. It would be awesome to meet everyone at the monthly meetings. I have went to the 2 they have had so far and it’s just so helpful. It makes you feel comfortable being around others that are having the same struggles/triumphs you are.

It is really hard to see myself smaller. I still dont really see it. We went to a New Years Eve party and so many people didnt recognize me. How funny is that. I have known them for years, just have not seen them in about 4 or 5 months. I have cut all my hair off. It is still coming out a little. Thats ok though. I have learned to deal with that side effect. I have about 30 pounds to go to reach my goal weight. My weight loss has slowed up. I know I need to exercise more. I have really been slacking. It is a new year and I have a lot to be thankful for. I wish everyone the best if 2008. Good luck and God Bless!

  132. Hi, everybody! It has been a while since I posted. I had my lap band surgery on Dec. 20 at TMF in Tyler. WOW! Everything went great. I had to stay overnight because I live 75 miles from Tyler, but that’s the only reason. I was up and walking that evening. I felt great…..until I got home. LOL. Then the healing and adjusting process began. After the swelling went down and I didn’t feel like I wanted to reach in my gut and rip the band out, everything was great! I had a lot of gas pain in my stomach. I finally felt like I was on top of things on day 8 or 9. I went for my 2 week post op visit and I was down 23 lbs! I was so excited. I go for my first fill on Jan. 31. I already feel some restriction now, and I wonder what it will be like after my first fill. I am on solid foods now, but definitely feel restriction.

  133. Happy New Year to everyone! Hope all is well ~~ Been a few months since I’ve posted but have enjoyed reading everyone’s progress! LoriP42 - I had the lapband July 07 ~~ to date I’ve lost right at 51 pounds. While it has been slower than bypass, it’s 51 more pounds than I’ve lost in the last 10 years! I too started out with about 138 pounds to lose ~ ideally 150. If I can lose another 50-60 pounds this year, I’ll be happy. It took a while for me to break out of the “how fast can I lose it” mode, I felt like I should lose it all immediately since I had gone to such drastic measures. But the difference I’ve notice in the the way I feel, the smaller clothing, and the medical problems that have resolved have taken the place of the obession w/how fast I’m losing. As Tina said, do your research, get Dr. B’s advice and you’ll make the right decision for you. Good Luck!

Hi TinaH ~ I had my 3rd fill in November. Unfortunately it was just days after my father died and I’ll be honest ~ it’s only been in the last few weeks that I’ve learned to work w/this fill. For about 6 weeks I was constantly throwing up after 2 out of 3 meals - but I contributed over 90% of it to stress (since the first 4 months were great - with no getting sick). I initially said #3 would be the last fill I was going to have because I really was having a hard time, but now as time has past… I’m wondering if I can have “just one more” — With this fill the rules really do apply - eating too fast, not chewing or eating the wrong thing — does set me off. I’m able to really tell now when it’s coming on and am able to stop it before it gets bad. This is the first fill that I can really tell the restriction and it’s putting more pressure on me to fix the eating habits. Unfortunately, I can still go out and put down a good meal in it’s entirety, and I can see I’m needing to implement the self discipline! But hey I’ve yet to gain a pound back — I just think I’d lose more if I was more discipline! But I’m working on it! Take care everyone ~ Susan LB 7/07

  136. LoriP42, I had the Lapband surgery 090607 and have lost 30#. Like I am sure you know, the band weight loss is much slower than the bypass, but according to research, ends up being about the same amount of weight kept off in the long run. Do your research, find what is best for you, there is no wrong answer..even if you decide not to have the surgery. Know your facts, go to some of the meets and let yourself have some time to think about it. To the banders: anyone had their second fill yet? Can you tell a big difference? They did not fill me the last time I was there and I have an appt early January for another potential fill. Sure hope they do it this time, feel like I need some help. Sharon-did you ever go for your second fill? Kristie, Nhlapband and Tina Marie–how are all of you doing after your surgery? Hope everyone is ready to ring in the New year, New you! Happy Holidays! 138. Hello. Im new here. Seriously thinking about this kind of surgery. Cant decide if I should try lapband or bypass. I really need the bypass to lose the kind of weight I need to lose (around 140lbs). But…Im scared of both. I know one seems more serious a surgery than the other. Any encouraging words ?? Ive been reading the comments and they all sound wonderful. And Judy H…I live in Palestine too. Congrats to all of you. I hope to be part of the group..

  140. Hello to all. I have not posted in long time. I am 3 and a half months out of my GB surgery. I am down 92 pounds. I have lost so much when I ran into my mom at Wal-Mart she didn’t even recognize at first. She had to turn back around and look again before realizing that it was me. I am so proud of everyone. You are all doing so well. I hope that everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Everyone be safe over the holidays. God Bless, Michael RNY 9-12-07

  143. ChristyP, I did not have bypass, but had lapband, but assume we can all eat about the same thing. The tomato soup has too much acid, try something more bland like potato or cream of chicken soup, cottage cheese, Protein shakes, SF yogart, SF Jello, really wet baked potato, nothing really thick or chunky right now. In about a week, try some SF fudge and fruit popcicles. And just add new things from there. But hang in there, it will get better. Kristie, yea! Your on your way. NHlapband and Tina Marie, how did your surgeries go? Sharon–did your fill ever get any better? I finally lost 2 more pounds after being stuck for a bit. That makes 27 since 090607. Work has been horrible and long hours and I just cant get motivated to work out like I should, but this too shall pass (I sure hope). Hope everyone is having a great week!~ Tina H- Lband 090607

I have been having some pain in my shoulders and neck but they say that’s where the carbon dioxide must have settled. Good luck to everyone else that’s having it done in December. You can DO it! Hope to see ya’ll at the meeting.

Hey, for all of you who have had lapband surgery lately with Dr. Babineau, is he now using the new AP Lapband?

  149. Oops…Carrie D>> I have never been able to go to any of the meetings, but my understanding is that they are every 3rd Monday of each month….so that would make this one 121707. And from what I understand, they meet in a room at ETMC, right off of the cafeteria (how cute!). You might call the office, just to make sure there is no special meeting time because of the holidays. 150. Kristie, Tina Marie and NPlapband–good luck to all of you having surgery in December! Kristie, this is your day? How did it go???? Hang in there, post op is fun for a few days and then you will settle out…dont regret your decision. Sharon N-Yes, I totally could tell a difference after my first fill. I had it done on a Friday and thought I was going to have to go back into the office Monday and have some taken out. It was almost too restrictive, but they said some of that was swelling too from the tightening of the fill. It took me about 1.5 weeks to get use to the newness of it and about a week before I went to get the second fill (which they ended up no doing), I was getting use to it and not feeling as much restriction. I was a little let down that they did not do the second fill because we are all in this loose weight mentality. But they know best. I do not go back until 011408 for the next potential fill. Surely, they will do it this time. You are not feeling any difference at all? Hope everyone is well and lets get through these holidays and to the New Year! Tina H–LBand 090607

Tina - - I just had my first fill on Wednesday. I really don’t feel any different. My next appointment for a fill is in 6 weeks, which won’t be until mid January. Did you get restriction after just one fill or have you needed to use a lot of will power?

  156. Hi everyone! My name is Kristie and I am having the lapband procedure on December 7th @ ETMC!! Less than one week away! :) I appreciate everyone being on here and answering questions. They are helping me with my anxiety. I got to go to the meeting in November and it was informative also. I just thought I would stop “lurking” and actually start writing. Looking forward to getting to know everyone. I also was wondering if the meeting was going to take place this month. I was just at the doctor’s yesterday and didn’t think to ask.

  157. Thank you all for answering my questions. You know, I’m the typical impatient person…I want everything done yesterday :)

Tina..I can have my surgery done at either ETMC or Mothers. I would prefer Mother Frances, but from what I’m understanding, there is like a $3,000 - $4,000 price difference. That could be wrong and I’m in the process of finding out. It is just taking a while simply because by the time I get off of work, the financial couselors are gone for the day. Argh…the one thing I can say about ETMC is that they are much easier to get in touch with. I found out everything I needed to; related to charges, via email with one of their admission specialists.

I’m actually still employed by Mother Frances on an as needed basis as well as working in the school district. I’m hoping that since I’m an employee and have been working there for almost 10 years, maybe they’ll cut me a break. Not sure, but I can ask. I’d definately prefer to be there since all of my friends are there and I’m familiar with the people. However, I’m not willing to pay $3,000 more to have the surgery there. I guess my friends can come visit me after they get off of work if that is indeed the case. I do love MFH though.

Oh, and congratulations! It sounds like the band is really working for you. How about head hunger? Any problems there?

    Pam…WOW!!!! How impressive! Congratulations :)

Has anyone heard about the Realize band? I’ve been trying to look and see what the difference is between the Lap-Band and the Realize band, but I’m not finding much other than the port looks smaller. Anyone know anything? Do you think Dr. B uses it?

  160. Hi everyone. I was wondering when the December support group meeting is. I didn’t know if it was on a different day because it is in December or anything. Also, does anyone know if there will be a speaker or anything? I would like to come and maybe bring my wife. If it’s on the 17th, that’s the Monday night before my surgery on that Thursday the 20th.

    Comment by nhlapband — November 29, 2007 @ 9:56 pm

  161. Carrie, why cant you have your surgery at MFH? I had mine there. Dr. B, has privilege’s at both hospitals, it really just depends what network your insurance determines to be primary facility. And yes, MFH was really great with me. I ended up having my surgery late in the day and had to stay overnight, but went home the next morning, early. To date, I have lost 25 pounds and it feels like a significant amount of inches, I already feel better. I have had one fill and this last time, they decided not to do the second fill because I had lost over the recommended pounds in between visits. I was really looking forward to the advantage of the second fill, but I know they know what is best for me. Gotta get my bum walking more! To all of the new ones fixing to have surgery or going through all of the red tape, just hang in there…the time will pass before you know it. At least you have made the decision and your on your way. Have a great week! Tina H-LBand 090607

But since then hardly even notice anything different. Tomorrow it will be 6 weeks for me and I go in for my first fill on Wednesday. I have lost about 15 lbs.

NH I am glad to hear you are approved and have a date set. Good luck and be sure and let us know how it goes for you.

Carrie ETMC was ok. Everyone was really nice and it was a good experience however I was only in my bed a couple hours, walked around the halls some and then went home same day.

  163. Hi again, Carrie. You’re on the right track with your PCP. That’s exactly what I did. If you already have 4 months of documenatation, then the worst case scenario is that you have 2 months left. And if you can document other ways you are trying to lose weight, like an exercise log or if you attend Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig, etc. I was surprised at how “on board” my PCP was too. I think that if there used to be a negative stigma attached to WLS it has long since disappeared. Good luck to you. Hope to hear from you again on this board.

Sharon, hi there! How are things going for you? How was your recovery time after surgery? I’m having the lap band in a few weeks.

  164. Hi Sharon and nhlapband…

Thanks so much for your responses :)

Sharon…congrats on your surgery! How exciting! How did you like ETMC?

nhlapband…thanks for the information. What a great Christmas present for you!

I went to visit with my PCP last week. She said that I’m an ideal candidate for the lapband. I was pretty relieved since I wasn’t sure she’d be for it at all. Anyway, I do have 4 months of documented physician supervised weight loss. I’m not sure if it will count, but she’s put it all in her recommendation letter and I’m collecting my medical/obesity history from the last 5 years from her and my GYN doctor. I haven’t really seen anyone else. Just in case, my PCP has agreed to see me monthly for weight & blood pressure checks so that we can document it for the insurance.

I have to be honest; I love Mother Frances. Of course, I’m probably a little prejudiced since I have worked there so long. The people make all the difference.

Good luck and keep us updated on your surgery :)

    Comment by Carrie D. — November 25, 2007 @ 11:26 am

  165. Hi Carrie. I went for my first appointment with Dr. Babineau in October. I am scheduled for surgery on December 20 at Mother Frances for the Lap Band.

As far as your insurance question, I have BCBS insurance. It is PPO out of Illinois, not Texas. I happen to work for BCBS of Texas. I had to go through the six month period of time of having a physician supervised weight loss program. One thing I cannot stress to you or to anyone else considering having this surgery and wanting their insurance to help cover the cost—DOCUMENTATION, DOCUMENTATION, DOCUMENTATION. I had medical records showing my 6 month physician supervised weight loss attempt. I had logs of my blood glucose readings and logs of my increased exercise and activity. I had letters from 4 physicians. AND my comorbitieis include high blood pressure, sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, and joint pain. I was still almost denied on my first attempt. On the committee, the nurse denied me, but the physician on the committee approved it.

If you call the customer service phone # on the back of your ID card, you can ask them about their medical policy for bariatric surgery. They should be able to tell you all about the requirements. Even if they require it, do not get discouraged. If they deny, find out why, meet that criteria, and then appeal. Sometimes it may feel like it’s an intricate dance, but it will be worth it in the end! God bless you!

Happy Thanksgiving, everybody! This time next month I wlll be “banded” and recuperating at home. I plan to eat a lovely Christmas dinner of chicken broth, sugar free popsicles, and if Dr. Babnieau and staff say it’s okay, maybe a little bland mashed potatoes! Hope to hear how everyone’s doing soon! You guys are an encouragement to us all. Keep in touch!

  166. Hi All!!!!!

Well I am 4 years out now. This past weekend was my date. I am up 5 pounds from my 152 pound loss. Maintaining well.
I would tell everyone considering the Gastric Bypass to study all you can and read everything you can get your hands on and make your decision based on that. I certainly never have regretted one minute of it. As most of you know my two daughters had it also.
Yes, the three of us are very happy.
Hang in there no matter which stage you are in. It is so worth it.
    Have a good holiday season.

  167. Hi Carrie - - Welcome! I just had my lapband surgery on Oct 15 @ ETMC. I was self pay so it was the least expensive choice. I have the AP Small lapband and have heard that it is an improved version that has less slippage or other complications. I am hoping that is the case with me. So far so good and I have lost 13 1/2 lbs. Not a lot but I expect to do better once I have my first fill on the 28th of November. Good luck with your journey!

  168. Hi everyone. I’m new to this board. I have been visiting the TylerBariatrics site for a while now, but I didn’t see the message board until today.

I am hoping to have the Lap-Band during Spring Break of next year. I’m really excited and can’t wait to begin my journey! I haven’t been to a meeting yet. The earliest I could get in was on December 26th.

I have heard fabulous things about Dr. Babineau and his staff. I am unsure where I want to have my surgery done. I’m still an PRN employee of Mother Frances and I work full time as an educational aide in the school system. I hear that Mother Frances is more expensive than ETMC and I have to take these things into consideration.

So, those of you who have already had your WLS, how do you like it? Any regrets? Anything you wish someone would have told you?

Anyone else out there have TRS Active Care BC/BS? Gosh, I hope they don’t require me to do the 6 month diet thing. Seems like I’ve been on some sort of diet all my life. I’m just ready to get this done!

Does anyone know what type of band Dr. B uses? Like the VG or the other one that inflates all the way around?

Okay…enough questions. Hope everyone is having a great weekend. Please feel free to contact me through my email. gebo0288@yahoo.com

I find out in about a month if its a boy or girl. We are very excited about that! My only concern is gaining weight. I know Im supposed to right now, but Im just scared I wont be able to get it back off. Oh well, I guess I’ll cross that bridge when I get there! Hope everyone is doing good!

  173. Thanks Tina!

You know I think we all go through the “blues” or “dumps” once in a while where we won’t have a good weight loss or even none at all. I’ll go through a couple of weeks where I’ll just a 2 lb loss and then all of the sudden I’ll lose 5 lbs. What a great feeling. I watch the show “Big Medicine” on TLC about the Davis Father/Son team of Bariatric Surgeons in Houston and I think to myself…why can’t I be like their patients… then surprise…I have a good weight loss and it’s very inspiring. (Of course you know they use their best cases on the show…lol)

I think it’s very important to keep a journal (I’ve said this before) to show exactly what is going into your body. If you put it down on paper you are more aware and more apt NOT to splurge or cheat… b/c then you have to “own” up to it in the journal. Just something to think about!

I hope everyone has a good eating week… I’m still afraid to try some things. I miss jalapeno peppers!!! I’m TOO scared to try them. I have tried the “low acid” orange juice…one week it was fine, then the other night I thought my intestines were actually bubbling out of me. I was in the fetal position… it was awful. The OJ got a really bad face :( in my journal!

One more thing: I know T-Day is coming up…I’ve already planned how to get around all of the fuss with the meal and everything. I found a cornish hen, you know the super small “chicken”… I think it will be ‘cute’ up against everyone else’s huge turkey with a little dressing and veggies… I’ll have my own T-Day celebration and not feel left out.

Have a super day & week! Thanks for the support! ~Shellie RNY 5/7/07 115# down.

  174. Wow Shellie! What an accomplishment. Sounds like you are doing great. I had my first band ‘fill’ 102407 and have lost 5 pounds since then, for a total of 22 pounds in 2 months. Slow and easy is the name of the game with banders, but its more than I have lost in a while. Having a time getting use to the adjustment and was kind of sick in the beginning, but I think I am getting a hold on it now. (I think) Banders: are you having to take tums or something for burping/gas all of the time? I also seem to have some kind of mucus build up sometimes in my stomach/esophagus that I have to bring up. Sometimes its painful. Anyone else experiencing this? My next ‘fill’ is the day before Thanksgiving….guess that is what I will be thankful for (he he). Keep up the good work everyone! I guess I was really in the dumps and I really appreciate your kind words. It is wonderful to have lost 65 pounds! I just needed to vent and get a little push back in the right direction. I have been ready Carnie Wilsons book “I’m Still Hungry”. It is a good book; I recommend for reading. I feel good today; I guess due to eating good again.

I am almost 4 years out now. Yes we all had slow times. Just remember why you did this in the first place. Not to eat donuts and candy.
I am playing with about 6 pounds and maintaining. I never cheated for almost 2 years. I can now try the boundries and it is hard to not eat those things when everyone around you is eating them.

You will loose weight if you eat right. Yes we all fall of the wagon. Get back on and continue to loose the weight. It does slow down and STOP.

    Have a good week.

Stop testing your new belly, tell yourself it will make you sick (hehe) and you can not have those Toosie Rolls. Man, I dont know how you honestly get that down, they seem really hard. Just eat as healthy as you can, exercise, continue your H2O, know that we all stall and it will pick back up again. And a little cheat here and there is living, but dont go overboard based on emotions. The issue with your daughter will work its way out….they always do. Hang in there! Tina LBand 09/06/07

  180. Hello everyone! It has been awhile since I have been here. I have been kinda down and out. I have found myself wanting to snack and see “how much” I can eat. I have only lost about 2 pounds the past 2 weeks. I began writing down everything I eat, TODAY. Should have done it way before now. I guess I was so excited about losing and not really eating I was worried about it. Well, now I am. I know the weight loss slows down, I am 5 months out. I get in my protein and drink more than the 64 oz. Since I had to have my pouch opening stretched, I have felt so good and been able to eat and drink. Yea, but my weight loss has slowed WAY DOWN! I was working out but stopped due to being down in the dumps. I brought my clothes and am going to workout after work. My workout buddy quit me so its just me!! My hair loss has slowed but I am still losing it! I cut it all off so it doesnt look like near as much as when my hair was long! I dont know why I am so discouraged right now. I have lost 65 pounds since 06/01/07. I am so grateful for this and like wearing smaller clothes. I have got to get out of this slump. I am hoping someone has been where I am and can offer some advice. I cant believe I have let myself “snack”. All the halloween candy doesnt help either. I have found I can eat a couple of small tootsie rolls. Bad bad bad! The taste is heaven and they didnt make me sick. I couldnt believe it. Now I have to be really strong and pass up the candy bowl at work. I walk by it every morning and basically all day. I am a stress eater and it hasnt helped that my daughter has decided to move in with her father. That is a very long story! She is a senior and I am having issues! Her father and I have been divorced for almost 14 years. She feels she has missed something and decided now was the time to find it! I have been going to my couselor twice a month to VENT! I really miss her. My son who is 13, didnt want even hesitate about not going. He said he would never leave me. Doesnt understand his sister right now! Anyways, sorry about rambling on. I just need some extra encouragement!

  181. Okay, got my initial fill and it was really not that bad, but did not realize so much jabbing was going to go on to break through the port. It was three days ago and I have finally lost another pound. I was wondering if they had too much fluid in there the first 2 days because I could not eat anything, but it seems to be getting better. Will give it until Monday and reevaluate. Are any of the banders feeling a heavy feeling on the side of your port, right after you eat? Like a pressure? Finally found some SF Fudge pops…was missing my chocolate. Everyone chime in, lets all share our new food substitues. Hope everyone is doing great and has a wonderful weekend. Tina H–LBand 09-06-07

  182. Thanks Teresa, my appointment went good yesterday. I had lost, not much but a loss. I thought it has been 10 months since my surgery and I have lost every time I’ve been back so that is good! Normally I would have gained weight if I had not had the surgery! Cathy is so good and so uplifting and so helpful. My weight loss is slow only because I do not do what I should do all the time, don’t exercise like I should, and don’t drink all the water I’m to drink. But I really feel encouraged and plan to do WHAT I’M SUPPOSE TO DO! The band is only a tool and I shouldn’ expect it to do miracles without my work too!

  183. Kathy, Sorry you are having a hard time. I hope it get’s better. I know you wanted it real bad and all the time you put in and exspence. Try not to eat over 5 or 6 grams of sugar. I’m glad I had bypass because I know I would be weak and eat junk food too. I know you can re group and do it. I will be praying for you and I know you can do it. Good luck to all!

  185. Thank all of you for your encouraging words! Halloween has been hard and there has been lots of candy EVERYWHERE and candy goes down so easy! Ugh! I am trying to be better. Some days are worse than others. I go to see Cathy on Thursday; I think I’m ready for another fill. I just wish the junk food was what we couldn’t eat and the healthy food was all we could eat, but it doesn’t work that way. Hope everyone has a good week.

  186. Good Monday to all. Just a little note…I’ve learned that if I keep a food journal I tend to be more aware of what I’m eating and drinking. Something about writing it down and showing it to someone keeps you on the right track. I keep track of what I eat and drink to make sure that I’m getting enough liquid and protein and I keep track of what foods make me sick or if I have a different reaction. At my follow up appt I could tell Kathy what I could/couldn’t eat and “prove” that I’m drinking or eating right. It keeps me on track. Have a great one! ~Shellie RNY 5/7/07 100#s gone since surgery, 108#s total lost.

  187. Hope this finds you well! Hey Tina… Once you get in the room, the fill takes less than 10 minutes, (it’s just getting to the room!) They locate the port with the ultrasound and that’s it! I don’t think I’ve been in the office more than an hour..and that was on a busy day. I find as I get further from the surgery date, that my appetite has increased and like you, I don’t get full as fast. But the die hard fact of …”the slower you eat, you feel fuller faster”.. is definately true for me. I just can’t seem to break the habit of always being in a hurry!! Can’t wait to hear how it goes! Good Luck! Daisy…. I think we’re all going through a “frustration” period, but it sounds like your on the right track! This wkend was hard and I found myself eating more… than I should and I’m trying not to beat myself up! We’re going on vacation the wk of Christmas and of course I’ve set those “goals” for myself… and I’m thinking I’m setting myself up for failure as my expectations may be a bit high! But I’ll keep on trying!!!! grrrr…..grrrrr I hope the scale did move this week for you and give you that extra boost of willpower! Best always, Susan LB 7/07

  188. Susan Thank you for the kind words and help. I know it is just a tool but it gets so frustrating, I want to be thin now. I think I have lost a pound or two this week so maybe that will get my head in the right place. Just bought groceries for the week and didn’t by snack stuff. YEA I will try to stay out of the candy at work. Thanks again for the help. Good luck to all.

  189. Susan LB 07/07, I am going in for my first ‘fill’ this week and wondering how long the whole thing takes? They said something about an Ultrasound and Xray, does this whole thing take a long time? Really looking forward to the fill, I have still just lost the 17-19 pounds since my surgery 09/06/07 and getting kind of frustrated. For some reason, I dont feel as full as fast as I did in the beginning. Is this normal? Guess I just need to really push the workout more. Hang in there everyone, we will get there. 192. Daisy ~ I too can eat anything/any amount, it almost feels like a curse when I read some of the issues people are struggling with. I know in order to succeed I have to discipline myself and that is a daily struggle that often will fail.

One of my friends (he and his sister have the band)…said one time… “Just because you can eat it….doesn’t mean you should eat it..” (He said this to his sister - she put on 25 lbs only to find out her band had a leak) - It’s been fixed and she’s lost the 25 lbs fairly quickly. I also have a friend who had bypass, lost a hugh amount of weight and gained 25-30 back a year later due to stress and snacking…the daily Starbucks didn’t help either. What that has shown me is - again, it doesn’t matter what procedure you have done - it is a struggle and hard work whether it’s with food or the emotional/discipline stuff.

I think we’d all agree, for the most part, that the decision to have the procedure was the right thing to do… and it will take time, but we will reach our goals with patience and determination. As I’ve said in earlier posts, it can seem like a month has passed and I’m not doing much, then I look at the calendar and realize it’s only been 2 1/2 weeks… but it’s ok… I know I’ll get there and if it takes me longer fine… You’ll get there too! So try and keep positive thoughts and keep on moving forward! Best to all! Susan LB 7/07

  193. I am sure glad to know I am not the only one with snacking issues. I had lap band on 07/16 and have lost 27 pounds but it has stopped now. I know it is because of getting back into bad habits. I am not scheduled for my third fill until the day before Thanksgiving. I don’t have a problem eating anything or any amount. THis is scary. I want to lose more weight.

  194. Kathy ~ take Sharon’s advice and don’t beat yourself up, just regroup and take it one day at a time, or a meal at a time, whatever is necessary to refocus, succeed and feel good about yourself. Remember - it didn’t take us months to put on all the excess wt. and there is no quick fix for this - all weight loss surgeries are “tools” and we still have to deal with the irritations that led us to put the weight in the first place. It’ll take time, but it will come off. I had my band 7/07 - and I am experiencing the exact same things you are, the snacking, the junk food… it’s still there - I’m frustrated, but trying to remember the big picture.

I’m trying to get in the habit if I snack, to eat vegtables with Ranch dressing as a dipping sauce. I’ve also had the Weight Watchers candy / ice cream bars as I don’t want to feel “deprived”. I’m just trying to utilize a “diet” program, whether Weight Watchers, Slim Fast or others, to plan healthy meals and such.

I’d suggest calling the office. I was to go in right after Turkdy Day for what I hope to be my “3rd” fill, I’m going in a few weeks earlier because of my concerns and frustation. So they’ll be able to help you and direct you. Good luck and keep the faith! Susan LB 7/07

  195. Kathy - - I was hoping someone with a lot of experience and great advise would answer your plea. I just had my surgery Monday and I have a lot to learn myself. I have a fear that the same issues you are experiencing now will happen to me too. Try and remember what you have been through and don’t let all that pain and expense go to waste. The weather is beautiful these days, when you get the urge to eat inappropriately, to outside and breath in some fresh air and maybe take a walk. Be sure that when you eat it is not in front of the TV. Please don’t let this get out of hand before you do something about it. You might need to see the dr for a fill. The fact that you are asking for help is a good sign that you are not ready to give up. Drink lots of water and hang in there!

  196. Need some support! I had lap band surgery after the 1st of the year; have lost weight but not a whole lot. But now, my old habits are trying to creep back–eating junk food and eating between meals, eathing too fast! Any advice or help????

  197. Hi again! I finally have my surgery date for the Lap-Band. It is December 20th. I’m so excited!

I went to the support group meeting on Monday night. It was good to meet so many nice people there! I’m not sure if I can make the next one, but plan to come in December for sure. The countdown has begun!

  198. Carolyn, I dont understand why TRS Active care is not requiring your to do the 6 month thing. That is on their website and has been in their guidelines for a long time. Even my friend have had to do this. I wonder how you got around that? Even Freda told us its always been that way. But I am happy you didnt have to go to a doctor for 6 consecutive visits for a weight loss thing….Glad you are doing good! Take care all….Tina

I love clothes now…hehehe…got the cutest skirt suit yesterday, and it’s in fashion right now! Woohoo! Feeling so good about that! Some of the stuff I just bought is getting too big. Love the feeling…hate the expense! ~Shellie
