Individuals vary, and there is no way to predict exactly how much weight a person will lose. Research and experience with gastric bypass and laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (Lap-Band) do seem to show some trends, shown in the graph below. The question marks are there because research on very long term results isn’t available. This is especially true for the Lap-Band, since the surgery has only been performed in the United States since 2001. Gastric bypass has been in use since 1967, but there still is not a great deal of research on results more than 10 or 15 years beyond surgery.
